The Witnesses: Boys Who Lived with Violence is an urgent and provocative documentary that explores the hidden impact of domestic violence on boys and the contradiction at the heart of Nigerian masculinity
Violence leaves victims. It also leaves witnesses. And sometimes, they are the same person. Through the stories of three Nigerian men, the film traces the lifelong consequences of growing up in violent homes. One is still searching for answers. One fears becoming the man he never wanted to be. One has chosen a different path—and now helps boys do the same. Drawing on findings from the Kunie Foundation's 2025 National Study on Masculinity and Gender-Based Violence in Nigeria, the documentary examines how violence is learned, how it is passed from one generation to the next, and what it takes—from parents and mentors to communities and institutions—to break the cycle. A powerful documentary about trauma, accountability, healing, and the possibility of change
