Man to Man: Redefining Masculinity to End Gender-Based Violence explores how Nigerian boys learn what it means to be men—and how these lessons can shape relationships, power, responsibility, and violence

Drawing on the Kunie Foundation’s National Study on Masculinity and Gender-Based Violence, the documentary examines the social, cultural, familial, religious, and environmental forces that shape masculinity from childhood. Through intimate testimonies and expert perspectives, men reflect on the fathers and communities that shaped them, the expectations placed upon them, and the ways ideas of strength, control, dominance, and emotional silence can be inherited across generations. The film confronts the consequences of these expectations, including aggression, harmful gender norms, and gender-based violence, while also examining the role of trauma, socialisation, accountability, and the absence of safe spaces for men to express vulnerability. Yet Man to Man is ultimately a film about possibility. Across different experiences and generations, men are choosing to question what they were taught, take responsibility, nurture healthier relationships, mentor boys, and model a different kind of manhood. The film asks a fundamental question: If masculinity is learned, can we learn to become men differently? It argues that redefining masculinity is not about taking power away from men, but about understanding power—and using it with care, intention, responsibility, and love.
